I recently visited southwestern Kansas to experience firsthand all the fun things that Garden City has to offer.
My favorite thing about Garden City is the culture you’ll find here. Garden City is home to dozens and dozens of ethnicities and cultures as it’s the hub of the beef industry.
I’m confident that Garden City is packed with activities and attractions to keep everyone entertained. Plus, it’s a great central location to start any South Western Kansas Road Trip. From its outdoor spaces to its unique museums and events, there’s something for everyone in Garden City!

Garden City, in the southwest Kansas region, is a hidden gem, offering a unique experience that you can’t find anywhere else.
Home to the Lee Richardson Zoo, Garden City has some of the best wildlife around. From tigers and zebras to reptiles and birds, it’s worth a visit just to see all of the various animals!
Additionally, Garden City is renowned for its collection of ethnic restaurants and foods, making it a great melting pot of different cultures and cuisine.
When visiting Garden City, make sure to take in some of the “World’s Largest Items” scattered around town.
You can also attend any number of events in Garden City such as Beef Empire Days and Vietnamese New Year.
No matter what brings you to Garden City, Kansas – the zoo, food scene, or special events – there’s something for everyone in this charming town, and it’s a great central location to your visit to South West Kansas.
1. World’s Largest Hairball
As a traveling road tripper, you may not expect to see a world-record-holding hairball while on your journey. But in Finney County Historical Museum, located in Garden City, Kansas, you can view the world’s largest hairball found in a cow’s stomach—weighing in originally at 55 pounds!
This is definitely one of those weird attractions found in roadside America, but it’s worth stopping into the museum. You can certainly tell stories about touching this oddball.
You can get up close and personal with this hairball and even touch it. It feels like dried velvet.
The hairball is just one of the clues that this is a beef town, since this was found inside a cow’s stomach. At the time, the beef packer was the largest beef packing plant.
2. Finney County Historical Museum
If you’ve stopped to mark off the World’s Largest Cow Hairball off your world’s largest list, you’re already in Finney County Historical Museum.
Finney County Historical Museum is an ideal destination for travelers and road-trippers who are looking to learn about the culture, history, and heritage of southwestern Kansas.
Located in Garden City, the museum offers a variety of exhibits to explore – from the Santa Fe Trail to Spirit of the Plains.
Plus, visitors can get an up-close look at artifacts that tell the story of the renowned Windsor Hotel & Saloon which was a major focal point in Garden City’s early days.
Later you can stroll by the Windsor Hotel in downtown Garden City, on the main street. It’s on the National Register of Historic Places.
As we were driving from Wichita to explore the southwest part of Kansas, we traveled through miles of farms, for both wheat and cattle. I enjoyed learning how this part of the state played an important part of our food industry.
In addition to taking a tour through exhibits such as these, visitors can also view quilt art and artifacts at the museum’s gift shop.
3. True Crime Exhibit
Another part of the Finney County Museum is the True Crime Exhibit. While this was initially going to be a temporary exhibit, it’s become quite popular. I wanted to keep this as a separate thing to do in Garden City.
If you’re a traveler or true crime enthusiast looking for something unique and exciting, then the True Crime Exhibit at the Finney County Museum is just what you need.
Learn more about some of history’s most notorious killers, like the Fleagle Gang, who in the 1920s inspired infamous outlaws such as Bonnie & Clyde, Baby Face Nelson and more. Also read about the Clutter Family, whose 1959 murder inspired Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood.
The museum did a great job piecing together the timeline of these real-life true crimes that happened in Garden City. You’ll also see how the FBI was able to lift a fingerprint from Jack Fleagle, one of the first instances of fingerprinting.
4. World’s Largest Pool
Garden City’s Big Pool is a must-see for all travelers to the area. The pool was built in 1921 and is one of the largest outdoor pools in the United States.
The pool has an interesting history – it was originally hand dug by the residents of Garden City and for many years was the World’s Largest Free Swimming Pool.
It’s so large in fact, a promotional stunt had 2 people waterski on top of it.
Perhaps most famously, several elephants have been known to take a dip in the Big Pool over its lifetime. The nearby zoo would bring the elephants to swim after it closed for the winter.
Now the Big Pool has Garden Rapids waterslide and a plunge pool for visitor’s enjoyment.
5. Lee Richardson Zoo
I next visited Lee Richardson Zoo in Garden City as it was next to the Finney County Museum and admission is free.
The Garden City zoo was even more beautiful than I had imagined. The pathways were well-manicured and landscaped, with plenty of trees and plants to make a leisurely stroll more enjoyable.
I enjoyed walking the gorgeous landscaped paths as the residents of Garden City take their name seriously. In addition to a variety of animals, some historical artifacts are also on site.
There’s a full steam powered locomotive on display, as well as a miniature sized train to take your and your family around the zoo.
The Fulton House is also on site. The Fultons were one of four founding families of Garden City and built a Folk Victorian home in 1884. It’s said that Lettie Fulton’s garden is credited with the naming of Garden City when a hobo walked by the Fulton home and asked the name of the city he was in. Not having a name of the town yet, he gestured towards her garden and suggested Garden City.
Overall, the Lee Richardson Zoo is worth an addition to your visit to Garden City, even if it’s for a nice walk with your family.
6. Sandsage Bison Range and Wildlife Area
Sandsage Bison Range in Garden City Kansas is a hidden gem for the traveling enthusiast. Located on public property, the herd of bison is small but incredibly majestic.
The range has a long and rich history, dating back to the mid-1800s when settlers first began to move into the area.
Visitors are encouraged to take part in guided tours of the range – with small numbers currently allowed, make sure you book in advance!
With its casual atmosphere and unique landscape, Sandsage Bison Range in Garden City Kansas is an absolute must-see for any traveler who wants to learn more and see the massive beasts.
7. Beef Empire Days
Garden City, Kansas is a small town with a big personality, and one event that embodies its unique culture is Beef Empire Days.
Held every year since 1977, this festival celebrates the area’s beef-packing heritage and offers visitors a chance to experience the city’s multi-cultural history.
The event features everything from carnival rides to craft shows and local food vendors selling delicious treats such as BBQ sandwiches and homemade ice cream.
Visitors can also enjoy live music performances in the evening and explore the historical exhibit housed at Finney County Historical Museum. With its fun atmosphere, Beef Empire Days is an enjoyable event for visitors of all ages.
8. Parrot Cove Indoor Water park
Parrot Cove Waterpark is the perfect destination for travelers with kids, offering an unbeatable combination of hotel and indoor waterpark.
Fun for all ages, this family-friendly attraction has something to offer everyone: from adrenaline-pumping water slides to lazy rivers and kid-friendly pools!
They also have #AdultNight @ TheCove, making it a fun thing for couples to do in Garden City.
Plus, the friendly staff creates a relaxed atmosphere perfect for an indoor water park. So come make new memories with your family at Parrot Cove Water Park!
The Clarion Inn and Suites is next to the water park but does not offer free passes.
I’d recommend the Best Western Plus across the street as a cozy and comfortable stay. It’s where we stayed on our trip and I was pleasantly surprised at how comfortable and plush it was.

9. Dining in Garden City KS
Garden City, Kansas is a melting pot of cultures each of which adds something unique to the city’s dining scene. In fact, there are over 20 languages spoken in Garden City and residents from over 35 different countries. It’s said that if you crave a type of cuisine, you can find it in Garden City.
The city was established at the intersection of two major cattle trails, making it an ideal location for packing plants and other related businesses. As these businesses grew, so too did the population of Garden City, which now boasts people from many different backgrounds.
This of course led to a variety of places to eat and restaurants in Garden City.
Vietnamese restaurants offer traditional dishes like Phở and Bún Thịt Nướng while Mexican staples such as tacos, burritos, and quesadillas can be found throughout the city.
