About Tonya

Hi, I’m Tonya. I’m A Expert In Planning Travel With Busy Teenagers

If you’re struggling to find more time to travel with your family now that your kids are teens, I’ve been there. With active social lives, activities, and school pressures, it can be hard to find time together as a family.

Then add in finding the places that your teens want to visit on your family vacation.

Here on Detail Oriented Traveler I tackle common misconceptions about traveling with teens including:

  • Teenagers aren’t interested in family activities
  • It’s hard to plan activiteis that cater to teenagers
  • Teenagers wont’ appreciate cultural or historical sites

I’ve found, by traveling with my teens, that most of these just aren’t true.

Here’s how I can help you plan a vacation your whole family will enjoy.

  • Detailed destination guides with things to do that teens will enjoy
  • Planning guides and advice designed to make the most of your vacation
  • Researched activities and personal stories about the places we’ve visited

Why Detail Oriented Traveler?

I started Detail Oriented Traveler in 2015 when my kids were 10 and 12, just starting their pre-teen years.

I had heard that at age 9, our kids have already spent half the amount of time living at home. I didn’t want to waste one more minute!

I noticed that we seemed to connect more as a family when we traveled. We were free of daily responsibilities and distractions. We discovered more things to talk about.

Together we have traveled to over 35 states and historical destinations. We camp, road trip, and fly. We stayed everywhere from private rooms and rustic campsites to luxury hotels. It doesn’t matter as long as we’re spending quality time together.

Some fun facts about me.

  • I’ve only ever lived in peninsula states, so I always feel the need to be near water.
  • I thrive on 80s movies, 90s music, and coffee
  • Stanley > Yeti
  • I’ve worked for a major theme park
  • My husband is a former marine
  • I absolutely love the whole business of blogging

I often tell my kids that I write this site for my best friend. She’s always calling me asking about things to do in a place, how to get there, and what else does she need to know. Now, she could look this up on her own, but she relies on the advice and real life experience I can give her.

I can’t tell you how many times I just put in directions in a map and send it to her.

But I love what I do. I love planning our travels. I have dozens and dozens of itineraries in my Roadtrippers app. I am always thinking of what to plan and how to make it the best vacation, even if it’s only for a day.
