If you’re visiting the Orlando area, you may be looking for something to do outside of the theme parks, that’s, well, outside! There’s a lot to do in the Orlando area that explores nature parks, rivers, and even getting muddy, something most kids I know love. Planning a day away from the theme parks also gets you some quiet time with the family and away from the crowds. Consider these five family-friendly outdoor activities in Orlando to add some different fun to your vacation.

Kelly Park

Kelly park

Get a real lazy river experience by heading to Kelly Park at Rock Springs. About 30-40 minutes north of Walt Disney World, Kelly Park offers plenty of space for a family outing. Think of a cool spring-fed river as a refreshing dip when summer temps reach into the 90s.

The nice thing about Kelly Park is that it is staffed with lifeguards, both along the river and in the swimming hole area.

Read my full review of Kelly Park here.

Other springs nearby include Wekiva River & Springs, Blue Springs, and De Leon Springs.

Wild Florida

If you want to get up close and personal with Florida’s wildlife, a visit to Wild Florida should be on your list. Take an authentic airboat ride, see alligators in their natural habitat, and then take a stroll through the wildlife park. The wildlife park offers shows, bird and alligator feeding, a petting zoo, and both native and exotic animals to view.

Leu Gardens and Mead Botanical Garden

If you need something a little more tame, yet beautiful nature setting, visit one of these gardens in Winter Park. The Mead Botanical Garden is free to the public. They have scheduled hikes and other free activities to learn about the native birds and plants of the area. Leu Gardens is a self-guided tour of 50-acre botanicals. They have a variety of events and educational opportunities as well.

Orlando Watersports Complex

More than a water park, The Orlando Watersports Complex is Orlando’s first aquapark. Think large inflatables, obstacle courses, climbing towers and more.

Additionally, you can learn how to wakeboard with their cable pulling system.

Not ready to try wakeboarding? Go at your own pace with Stand-up paddleboarding instead.

Watch the standard cable here.

Off Road ATV

Revolution Off Road

Get dirty at Revolution Off Road where you can explore the backroads in an ATV or Mucky Duck. If you choose the Mucky Duck, you don’t even have to stick to the roads. You can get wet by plunging into the water as well. This is a fun way to get active, get outside, and have fun. This adventure surprised me by how much I enjoyed it!

Revolution Off Road is about 20-30 minutes west of Disney and offers more than just ATV rides.

See pictures of our adventure here.
