Whenever you’re buying travel these days, be it a flight, hotel reservation, or cruise, you’re usually asked at the end if you want to buy travel insurance. And I bet, if you’re just traveling within the US, you probably skipped adding it on.

I mean, travel insurance protects you overseas, right? Why do you need travel insurance for domestic travel?

Having used travel insurance a number of times, all within the United States, I’m here to tell you why I’ve used travel insurance for a domestic trip. But you don’t need to buy it when you’re making your airline or hotel reservations. More on that in a bit.

Even when I road trip, I buy a travel insurance plan.

In the past, I’ve purchased plans for each individual single trip. This year, however, I sprung for the yearlong travel insurance plan from Allianz Travel Insurance that covers all my family members.

Travel insurance, especially when you’re a US resident traveling within the US, may seem like an extra expense. But like with any other type of insurance, you never know when you might need it and the peace of mind far outweighs the expense. Plus you’re protecting your vacation investment and can budget it into the overall cost.

Below, I’ll cover some Travel Insurance 101 and common misconceptions about using travel insurance in the US.

Let’s get to it.

This post is sponsored by Allianz Global Assistance (AGA Service Company) and I have received financial compensation. However, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

How I’ve Used Travel Insurance Domestically

Because I’ll reference some of these instances below, I have 3 stories on how I’ve used travel insurance in the past.

First, on a road trip from New York to Florida, I was delayed by a hurricane going through North Carolina. I am telling you I-95 was closed. Signs everywhere basically told you to reroute if you can.

Because we had added time to our drive home (trip interruption or trip change) I had to spend money on an added hotel stay, food, and fuel. Our travel insurance plan covered a portion of these expenses. Also, this natural disaster reason happened to me twice!

Second, and most recent, our rental van was broken into and items stolen while we were in the Pacific Northwest. Baggage loss covers theft of baggage and personal effects.

Third, and most severe, my husband had an accident while we were traveling. While our medical insurance covered what it did, our travel insurance emergency medical assistance helped where our insurance couldn’t.

Travel insurance canceled and refunded his flight home (he was returning earlier than the rest of us), booked him and my son on a flight home after he was released from the hospital, and covered additional expenses that our medical insurance did not.

None of these are your typical flight delay or baggage loss. None of these would have been covered by an airline or a hotel. And all of these instances happened while traveling domestically.

Travel Insurance Basics

Knowing the above, you might want to learn a little more about the terms and travel insurance basics when seeking out a plan.

When you buy travel insurance for domestic flights or a hotel stays, it often covers things such as cancellation and trip interruption. The main reason I buy a plan through Allianz is that I can choose the level of coverage I want. Essentially, I can choose the dollar amount my plan covers for things such as trip cancellation, baggage loss, delays, and more.

Travel insurance goes beyond just canceled flights.

Here are some basic terms you need to know.

  • Trip Cancellation coverage – If you have to cancel your trip for any reason that’s covered by your plan, you can receive a refund of your pre-paid, non-refundable expenses.
  • Trip Interruption coverage – If you, or forces outside your control, interrupt your trip, you can receive a refund of your unused non-refundable deposits plus the extra cost to return home quickly.
  • Travel Delays – Receive compensation, per person, per day, for additional expenses such as lodging, transportation, and meals.
  • Baggage Delays/Loss – Reimburses the reasonable additional purchase of essential items if your bags are delayed, or lost. Loss can include theft as I mentioned above.
  • Medical Emergencies & transportation – provides compensation for emergency medical treatment and/or transport to the closest appropriate facility and home.

The key thing about travel insurance plans is that they vary in coverage and reimbursement of the above. It’s important to review the different plans available with Allianz Travel Insurance, as well as your overall costs, and what level of coverage you desire.

When You Might Not Need Travel Insurance for Domestic Trips

  • Short, Inexpensive Trips: Low-cost trips where the financial risk is minimal.
  • Existing Coverage: Situations where your credit card, homeowner’s insurance, or health insurance plan may already offer sufficient protection.
  • Traveling Close to Home: Day trips or local travels that don’t involve significant expenses or risks. Additionally, most plans only cover you once you are outside a certain radius from your home. (300 miles for example)

Why use Allianz Travel Insurance?

Allianz Global Assistance is part of one of the world’s largest travel insurance companies. The parent company has been around for over 100 years.

However, personally, I’ve found their prices can’t be beaten for the coverage offered. I’ve always had a good experience with them. And most recently, my report and claim was paid in about a week.

The Allyz TravelSmart App

The newest reason I love Allianz, is the Allyz TravelSmart App. The Allyz TravelSmart App puts all the information about my insurance plan in my pocket when I’m on the go.

Here are ways I’ve used the app.

  • File a claim in the app. There’s no need to wait until you get home to file a claim. It’s easy to do in the app and the turnaround in Allianz’s reply is quick.
  • Access Customer Care for 24 hour emergency medical assistance. This is after you call for emergency help of course.
  • Find local emergency numbers and hospitals
  • Check on flight alerts, and flight tracking.

Other ways to use the app include:

  • View and edit your travel protection plan details
  • Get safety alerts for your destination, both before and during your trip
  • Find the universal pharmaceutical names of common medications so you can communicate in other languages
  • Find first aid terms in 18 languages

And here’s one of my favorite things about the Allyz TravelSmart App. When you add your flight information to the app, you may receive SmartBenefits automatically for a covered travel delay that is detected by Allianz.

Common Misconceptions about Domestic Travel Insurance

This section could also be called, all the ways I’ve used travel insurance.

Here are some common misconceptions about travel insurance:

“I Don’t Need Travel Insurance for Domestic Trips”

Many travelers believe that travel insurance is only necessary for international travel, not realizing that unexpected events like trip cancellations, medical emergencies, or lost luggage can happen anywhere. See reasons number 1 and 2 on my list above

“My Health Insurance Will Cover Me Everywhere”

Some think their health insurance will cover all medical expenses while traveling domestically, but many health plans have limited coverage outside of your home state, and usually do not cover emergency evacuations.

“Credit Cards Offer Enough Travel Protection”

While some credit cards offer travel protection, the coverage is often limited and may not be comprehensive enough to cover all potential issues, such as trip cancellations or extensive medical emergencies.

I’ve used travel insurance to pay for additional hotel expenses that a credit card couldn’t have covered due to weather delays.

“Travel Insurance is Too Expensive”

Many assume travel insurance is costly, but in reality, it’s often a small percentage of the total trip cost. The expense is relatively minor compared to the potential financial losses due to trip interruptions or medical emergencies.

Weigh the benefits, but I’ve paid between $40 and $120 per person.

“I Can Buy Travel Insurance Anytime”

Some people believe they can purchase travel insurance at any time before or even during their trip. However, certain benefits, like coverage for pre-existing conditions or trip cancellations, may only be available if the policy is purchased soon after booking the trip.

“Travel Insurance Covers Everything”

There’s a misconception that travel insurance is a catch-all that covers any and every issue that might arise during a trip. In reality, policies have specific inclusions and exclusions, so it’s essential to understand what is and isn’t covered.

Yes, I have been denied certain portions of claims due to exclusions.

“I Won’t Need Travel Insurance for a Short Trip”

Travelers often think short trips don’t warrant insurance. However, even short trips can be disrupted by unforeseen events like flight cancellations, lost luggage, or sudden illness.

“Travel Insurance is Only for Flight-Related Issues”

Many believe travel insurance only covers issues related to flights, but comprehensive policies can cover a wide range of scenarios, including trip cancellations, medical emergencies, rental car damage, and more.

I’ve used it on road trips and for trip delays.

“I Can’t Get a Refund on Travel Insurance”

Some think that once they buy travel insurance, they’re stuck with it. However, many policies come with a “free look” period during which you can cancel the policy for a full refund if it doesn’t meet your needs.

Allianz Travel Insurance has a 15-day free look period that allows customers to change, exchange or cancel a plan.

Wrapping Up

While it might be tempting to skip travel insurance for domestic trips, my experiences have shown just how valuable it can be.

Whether you’re dealing with unexpected weather events, stolen belongings, or medical emergencies, having that extra layer of protection can save you time, money, and stress. Remember, it’s not just about covering flights—travel insurance is about safeguarding your entire journey, from start to finish.
