Crisp leaves, cider donuts, and vibrant college town energy, Ann Arbor in the fall is pure magic. 

I grew up in Michigan, but I didn’t truly appreciate fall until I moved to Florida. Now, as soon as September hits, I find myself longing for cool air, golden leaves, and all the cozy things I once took for granted.

That’s why for the past couple of years, I’ve made it a point to visit Ann Arbor to soak up every bit of autumn, from pumpkin patches and cider mills to independent bookstores and late-night tea and desserts. 

If you’re planning a fall trip to Ann Arbor and want to make the most of the season without hours of research, this guide is your go-to resource. Day 1

Morning: pumpkin patches, farms, and farmers’ markets

Your first fall morning: jump right into the fall spirit searching for pumpkins at a pumpkin patch. There are quite a few in the area. 

My first time through Ann Arbor, I didn’t even know I was going to stop and visit a pumpkin patch until I saw signs for Wing Farms on the side of the road. I’m so glad I stopped. I got the best pictures, strolled through rows and rows of pumpkins, bought my own pumpkin to take with me, and even enjoyed local spirits from a local distillery.

The Ann Arbor Farmers Market reminded me why farm stands and farmers’ markets are always better up north. There’s just so much farm-fresh produce to choose from. The selection, the colors, the fresh finds even the fall flowers made me wish I lived closer. You can also check out:

Afternoon arboretum and nature trails

In the afternoon, head to Nichols Arboretum to stroll along the nature trails and enjoy the fall foliage. Fall colors peak in Ann Arbor change every year, but a good time frame would be mid to late October.

Ann Arbor is just west of Detroit, so use that as your guide

Evening TeaHaus cafe

The Tea Haus Cafe was one of our favorite stops on our multi-generational trip to Ann Arbor. It feels like the perfect way to cap off your first evening in the area.

Order a cozy hot chai, tuck into a delicious pumpkin spice cake, and enjoy people-watching. We saw students drawing, couples playing cards, and groups socializing here. It’s the perfect place to disconnect as they discourage laptops and offer no wifi. 

Day 2

Morning scenic drive to see “color”, orchards,  pick apples, visit cider mills

This is your chance to get out of the city of Ann Arbor and enjoy the countryside even more than before. Pick a direction from Ann Arbor and head to Chelsea, Dexter, or Ipsilani. Here you’ll find Dexter’s Cider Mill, my personal favorite.

According to Ann Arbor, these are the best fall drives:

  • Huron River Drive, between Ann Arbor and Dexter
  • ​Old US 12: From Chelsea through Ann Arbor to Ypsilanti 
  • Gale Road from Cherry Hill Road to Geddes Road
  • Warren Road from Curtis Road to Dixford Road
  • Mahrle Road from Grossman Road to Sharon Hollow Road 
  • Marshall Road from Zeeb Road to Baker Road
  • Within the city of Ann Arbor: Huron Parkway, Geddes Road and Dixboro Road 

The Dexter Ann Arbor Road is literally where I changed my whole route just to stop at a pumpkin patch. 

In Dexter, the town itself is small, cozy, and very welcoming, with two bookstores to browse later. The Dexter Cider Mill is the oldest continuously operating cider mill with a wood press and blended cider. You can pick up anywhere from a pint to a gallon of cider, apple cider donuts, and my personal favorite: drinking hot apple cider behind the mill next to the river.

Afternoon – stroll through cozy bookstores or attend a football game

If you’re in Dexter and love a good bookstore, check out the Fox and the Feather and Courageous Books. If you head back to Ann Arbor, my mom’s personal favorite is the Dawn Treader bookstore, where she found a number of used books.

Ann Arbor is also home to Literati Bookstore, and their selection is fantastic. Be sure to stop in the basement, as it’s super cozy, and check out their Michigan recommendations.

Fall is synonymous with football, and what better place to take your football fans to a college game than at the University of Michigan? If you are in town during a home game, catch the Wolverines at the Big House. It’s the largest college football stadium in the country, and the energy during a Michigan football game is unmatched.

Evening – catch a show at Purple Rose

Finally, for an evening, I can think of nothing better than heading out to Chelsea to catch a show at the Purple Rose. This charming theater is a nonprofit company founded by actor Jeff Daniels, and it’s dedicated to creative new voices. Their calendar includes both new plays and established classics.

Day 3

Morning – kayak the Huron River

I love to kayak, and I can think of nothing better than kayaking the Huron River with crisp, cool weather and stunning fall foliage drifting by. You can rent kayaks and canoes through the Gallup River livery. Sections of it close mid-September. Or head to Argo Cascades which is open until mid october.

Afternoon – find a corn maze or hayrides

If you’re still looking for more fall things to do in Ann Arbor, you can. head back to some of the farms or U-pick apple orchards from your first day and do anything that you didn’t get to do, such as a corn maze or a hayride, find one of the nature preserves and walk, hike, or bike, or simply wander the streets and grab a last few souvenirs at Cherry Republic or Rock Paper Scissors

We stayed at the Vanguard Hotel close to downtown Ann Arbor. This was the perfect central location for all of our drives to the neighboring towns in Washtenaw County. 

The hotel was comfortable, stylish, and easy to get in and out of. We opted for daily valet service, so parking was never an issue. 

I visited and stayed here with my mom and daughter and we chose The Vanguard in part due to their accessible suites. My mom uses a walker and there was plenty of space for the three of us to enjoy the room without feeling crowded (and an extra half bath didn’t hurt!)

Where to eat

If you don’t get enough farm-fresh flavors at the farmers’ markets and you pick farms, there are a couple of farm-to-table options in the Ann Arbor area.

Additionally, some of our favorite places that we’ve eaten are Iggy’s Eggies, Savas, and Thompson and Co.

Sava’s also has a fresh selection menu, and the staff treated us like family when a surprise storm popped up. 

Wrapping it up

I would absolutely choose Ann Arbor for a fall in Michigan trip, again and again. My personal favorites are the cider mills, the U-pick orchards, and the dozen or so bookstores spread throughout the county that give that perfect cozy fall reading vibe.
