Recently we bought an Amazon Echo. While we’re a little late to the game of having a smart device in our home, I can see the value of traveling with the Echo Dot already. We use it to check the weather not only at home but also at our destinations. These 11 Amazon Skills are my favorite reasons to travel with an Echo Dot.

Travel with an Echo Dot

If you don’t already have an Amazon Echo Dot, consider buying one for your next vacation. The Echo Dot is small, easy to pack, and packed with everything you love about Alexa. Even if you have the larger versions, I’d still invest in picking up an Echo Dot before you travel. If you already have a Dot, consider getting an extra one to keep in your suitcase so you don’t have to worry about disconnecting the one at home.

How to Set Up your Echo Dot

As you travel from hotel to hotel, you may wonder how to set up your Echo Dot. Each time you connect to a different Wifi, it won’t automatically connect.

  1. Plug the device in.
  2. Connect to the Hotel Wifi
  3. Open the Alexa App
  4. Select Devices
  5. Select Your Device
  6. Select Change next to the WiFi Network and follow the instructions in the app.

Alexa Skills List for Travelers

1. Weather

Probably the most important Alexa skill I use is asking for the weather forecast. You can ask for the daily, tomorrow, or weekly forecast.

Say, “Alexa, what’s the seven-day forecast for Muskegon, Michigan?”

2. Traffic & Transportation

Second, to the weather, you need to know how long it’s going to take you to get somewhere. Whether you’re driving yourself or using public transportation, you can ask Alexa for the traffic report.

Say, “Alexa, what is the traffic like in Orlando?” or Say, “Alexa, are there any subway delays in New York City?”

3. Reminders

I use reminders on my phone and on Alexa all the time. Especially when you’re traveling if you have ticket reservations or need to leave the hotel at a certain time, these reminders will help you get to your activity faster.

Say, “Alexa, remind me to leave at 11 am”

4. Alarms

Who can ever figure out the hotel alarm clocks? I’ve never been able to, nor do I always want to. Granted, you can set an alarm on your phone, but I like using Alexa to wake me up. Since I pay for Amazon Prime, I get Amazon Music. I can use any playlist to set an alarm.

Say, “Alexa, set an alarm for 8 am with Hip Hop Music.

5. Sleep Sounds

Ready for bed? Alexa can play soothing night sounds, ocean waves, nature sounds, or even white noise. This can be especially helpful for young kids who are in new surroundings.

Say, “Alexa, play ocean waves for 30 minutes.”

6. Music

I’m a big fan of having music going when we’re hanging out, getting ready, or even sitting on a balcony enjoying the sunset. Plus, since every traveler needs Amazon Prime and unlimited Amazon Music, you’re covered.

Say, “Alexa, play my favorite playlist.”

7. Games

One of the benefits of traveling together as a family is the amount of downtime and together time we get. We often use that to play games. Even if we can’t pack a lot of games with us, we can travel with the Echo Dot. Some of our favorite games include Song Quiz, Jeopardy, Would You Rather. There’s a ton more, take a look at Games & Trivia in the Alexa App.

Say, “Alexa, play Song Quiz.”

8. Points of Interest

Did you know Alexa can tell you the top attractions in your area? This only works in the bigger cities for right now, but if you’re traveling and looking for something to do, she can give you some ideas.

Say, “Alexa, what can we do in Orlando?”

9. Restaurants

This is one of my favorites. Need to know the top restaurants? Just ask!

Say, “Alexa, what are the top Mexican restaurants near me?”

Want the food to come to you? There’s a host of food skills on Alexa. Just go to skills to see which ones you want to activate. Think GrubHub, Pizza Hut, and more.

Say, “Alexa, order a pizza.”

10. Meals

Speaking of meals, the Alexa Echo Dot can even help you cook. We like to travel where we have a kitchen and often make at least one meal on our own. Connect Alexa with your OurGroceries app to easily add ingredients to your shopping list. Then when you’re ready to cook, she can walk you through step by step.

Say, “Alexa, how do I make fajitas?”

11. Flight Status

If it’s time to fly home, Alexa can tell you your flight status.

Say, “Alexa, what’s the status of Delta Flight 1212.”

Extra Add Ons for Travel with an Echo Dot

Even if you already have an Echo Dot, consider getting some of these add-ons to take with you traveling.

Get this shockproof and padded carrying case to protect your Echo Dot.

Want to get really fancy and control the lights in your room or rental house? Grab a set of smart plugs to bring with you.

Speaking of plugs, if you’re traveling overseas, you’ll need an outlet adaptor.

    1. I’ll be honest, it was one of those Alexa skills emails that got me thinking about it. But loved when I did bring it. It was fun on a group trip too.
