It’s my favorite time of year, road trip season. Summer is the perfect time to pack up the car, the kids, the hubby, and head out on the highway. (Get your motor runnin!)

With that, I run a check of everything I need for our travels. Our goal is to have a fun, yet safe road trip.

There are snacks, of course, activities and music. But most importantly, we need to prepare for emergencies.

Emergency Kit

The following is my comprehensive list of what you should have in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

  1. Jumper Cables
  2. Flashlights – more than one
  3. Lanterns
  4. Reflective Triangle or Flares
  5. Power Bars or other non-perishable food
  6. Water
  7. Tire Guage
  8. Life Hammer
  9. First Aid Kit  – Click to read what I include
  10. Ponchos
  11. Blankets
  12. Whistle
  13. Fire extinguisher
  14. Portable Cell Phone Battery
  15. Multi-Function tool

Some of these items should be standard. Additionally, it’s key to have water and food for your family just in case you’re stranded.

Personally, I love this all in one Emergency Kit on Amazon. Some of this kit is filled with first aid items, which is always great to have extra. That being said, for the price, you won’t find these items separately. In addition to my above list, the Emergency Kit adds in a tow rope, seatbelt cutter, wrench, and cable ties.

Vehicle Check-Up

In addition to ensuring you have everything in case of an emergency, to have a safe road trip, be sure to get your vehicle checked before you leave. On this checklist we include:

Finally, it may not seem standard, but washing and vacuuming your car before you go can make you feel clean and ready to pack. Also, you may want new car mats fitted in, especially if you’re leaving on a long road trip, to protect your car’s interior floor better.
