If you’re the sort of person who loves classic American food, then Michigan is the place to be. There’s nothing pretentious about the state’s cuisine. It just reminds you of the type of fare that you used to eat when you got up. Pretty much everything that’s worth eating in the state has an old-time feel about it, which is one of the reasons so many people travel there each year. 

In this post, we take a look at some foods to get excited about if you’re heading over in that direction. Which of the following makes you hungry?

Cherry Tart Pie

As you’re strolling around the great lakes and the vast midwestern metropolises, you’ll undoubtedly come across cherry tart. This classic comes out of the fact that the climate around Michigan is perfect for cherry trees, which blossom beautifully in the early spring. 

The state of Michigan does not, of course, have an official food. But if there was one contender that was in the running, it would be cherry tart pie. There’s nothing like it. 

Pinconning Cheese

As you make your way around the cities and small towns in the state, you’ll also encounter the much-loved pinconning cheese. This delicacy got its start out of a local barn at the end of WWII. It’s since become a staple of the state and even made its way into the menus of some national chains. It’s loved for its hardness, sharp flavor and the fact that it can easily replace cheddar. 

BBQ Pork

Thanks to the proliferation of pork farms in Michigan, BBQ pork has long been one of the staples in the state. The typical BBQ restaurant in this part of the world likes to cook over an open fire and use a special, proprietary glaze. Ribs are an option, but they’re not the only cut of meat. The BBQ extends to the whole pig, with many cooked in pits whole for extra juiciness and flavor. 

Coney Island Hot Dogs

There’s nothing quite like Michigan’s Coney Island hot dogs. These are pretty much the same as standard dogs, with the frankfurter and bun. However, it has some additions that you might not find in other parts of the country passed on from Greek migrants. Additional toppings include meat sauce in addition to the regular mustard and onions, giving it a more umami flavor. 

White Navy Bean Soup

Navy bean soup has been a staple of Michigan cooking for more than a hundred years. It’s made using celery, garlic, parsley ham hocks and, of course, navy beans. 

Apparently, the soup was so highly rated that legislators served it as an official dish in the senate dining room from the early 1900s. Today, it’s considered true hometown food for the region. 

Superman Costume Ice Cream

While you can get multi-colored ice cream anywhere in the country, the state of Michigan is where it all starts. The Superman theme – red, yellow, and blue – combines flavors such as cherry and lemon, both traditional to the state.
